Tettenhall became part of Wolverhampton in 1966, though it retains a distinctive identity quite separate from the larger city. The name derives from Old English “Teottanhalh”, meaning “nook of land belonging to a man named Teotta”. The area sits on a ridge running from Aldersley to Perton, with the original settlement located below in the sheltered area around what is now Lower Green.
The Battle of Tettenhall in 910 marked a turning point in Anglo-Saxon history, when forces under Edward the Elder of Wessex and Ealdorman Æthelred of Mercia defeated Danish Viking invaders, killing two Viking kings and ending large-scale raids into southern England. This historical significance has left its mark on the area, with Danescourt in the northern part taking its name from this pivotal conflict.
St Michael and All Angels Church, positioned at the base of the ridge near Lower Green, was founded sometime between 959 and 975 AD during the reign of King Edgar. The church was once collegiate, with a dean and five prebendaries until its dissolution under Henry VIII. Button Gwinnett, who became the second signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, had two daughters buried in the churchyard in 1759 and 1762.
What makes Tettenhall particularly unusual is its possession of two village greens – one of only a handful of places in England with this feature. Upper Green sits on high ground with a large paddling pool, cricket pitch, and extensive grass areas. The Wolverhampton Cricket Club Ground here was visited by W.G. Grace himself. A clock tower built in 1912 by the local Swindley family to celebrate King George V’s coronation serves as a key landmark. Lower Green slopes down near the church and becomes popular for sledging when snow arrives.
The area developed as a desirable suburb during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, attracting wealthier residents who built substantial homes on the elevated sites with views across South Staffordshire. Today it maintains this character – quieter and more spacious than central Wolverhampton, with tree-lined streets, independent shops around the high street, and a strong sense of local identity.
Property styles: Tettenhall offers a broad selection of architectural styles across its different neighbourhoods. The area around Upper and Lower Greens features substantial Victorian and Edwardian properties, many built during the area’s development as a desirable suburb. Tettenhall Wood contains attractive detached and semi-detached family homes from various periods, while areas like Stockwell End and streets off Wrottesley Road are known for larger executive properties with generous plots. You’ll also find modern developments scattered throughout, particularly retirement apartments and contemporary family homes built in recent decades.
Streets like Woodthorne Road, Henwood Road, and properties around The Wergs represent some of the most desirable addresses, typically featuring spacious detached houses with large gardens. Period terraces and semi-detached homes are found throughout the village centre, many retaining original features whilst being updated for modern living.
Developments: Recent years have seen selective development focused on quality rather than quantity. Retirement living has been a particular focus, with developments like Thorneycroft providing purpose-built apartments for over-70s. Individual plots have been developed with substantial detached properties, particularly in established roads where larger sites become available. Planning permissions have been granted for extensions and replacement properties, reflecting the area’s continued desirability for family homes.
Property prices: According to Rightmove data, the average property price in Tettenhall over the last year was £325K. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £297K, while detached homes commanded around £482K.
